Overview of the Charter Award Process - Qualifying for the AoC international Charter
Stage I
- College registers as ‘working towards’ the Charter 
College, pays Year I subscription
 and carries out an initial self-assessment against the Charter Review Instrument using the assessment Matrix.
Stage II (optional)
- The College may also choose to participate in Peer Review and Development (PRD) as part of its preparation for the Charter Review - AoC can help to identify PRD partners
- The college may wish to produce ‘improvement plans’ for specific areas as a result of PRD and/or a revised self-assessment.
Stage III
- The College finalises self-assessment – at this stage the College’s International/Global Strategy is prepared in at least draft format
- The college notifies AoC that it is ready for external review
- The review visit takes place: External Reviewers sample evidence - the College’s self-assessment and improvement plans and the College’s International Strategy as key reference documents. The Guidance Handbook details the criteria which are applied to the various elements
- The College receives feedback on the review and is notified of AoC’s decision regarding the award of the International Charter to:
- award the Charter, or
- award the Charter subject to specific action points will be subject to an agreed timescale and a follow-up assessment, or
- to defer the award - feedback will be given on the reasons for this decision (re-application will be possible after a minimum period of six months).
The Timetable
The time needed to work towards Charter assessment will vary from College to College. Some may be almost ready at the time of registration whilst others will be beginning the journey. The time between registration and assessment will be the choice of the College. No time limit will be imposed in the first instance.
