This programme has been specially designed for AoC Charter Colleges by the Institute of Education’s Development Education Centre and is sponsored by LSIS.
AoC recognises how difficult it can be for staff to take time out of their schedules to reflect on their area of work with colleagues from other Colleges who are facing the same challenges. Thus, the first 20 Colleges to join the AoC International Charter scheme will be entitled to a free place on the programme (it is recommended that the participant should be the member of staff who is leading on developments related to the Charter).
Please note that due to the fact that some of the representatives of the Charter colleges are unable to attend on these dates, we are able to offer a small number of free places to other colleges. The places will be offered on a first-come first-served basis and interested colleges should contact us at: charter@aoc.co.uk
Accommodation for the night of Sunday 21 March will be provided for all participant who request it at either the either the Tavistock or the Bedford Hotel (participants will be asked to specify a preference when they register for the seminar).
Aims of the programme:
This is a pilot programme and once tested, the model and framework may be adapted to create other programmes linked to the AoC Charter. Participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions about the AoC International Charter framework. Venue:
Development Education Research Centre
Institute of Education

PROGRAMME
Pre-course task Participants will be sign-posted to relevant reference resources and asked to consider what ‘a global college’ would actually be and the extent to which their own institution would fit this description at present. Participants will be asked to share their views with the group during the first session.

12.00 - 13.00 Arrival and registration plus buffet lunch
13.00 - 15.00 Unit 1: What ‘globalising the college’ means
This unit will explore what 'globalising the college' means. You will consider your own perspective on this in relation to that of your college, how this relates to the AOC Charter and the significance of this area of development for the FE sector as a whole. The types of activities that may contribute to globalising the college will also be explored, as well the potential barriers to achieving this aim.
Coffee
15.30 -17.30 Unit 2: Building Effective Partnerships
The focus of this unit will be on developing and managing mutually beneficial partnerships, both international and local. You will consider what makes good partnerships and the role that these may play in ‘globalising the college’. Partnership working in the context of relationships within the college will also be considered.
DAY 2: MONDAY, 21 MARCH
9.30 - 15.00 approx (including lunch and coffee breaks) Unit 3: Planning and Implementation
This unit will focus on the opportunities and challenges involved in planning and implementing activities to globalise the college and in working towards the AoC International Charter standard. You will consider how to approach this within your particular institution and will share your ideas with other participants. You will consider how to address obstacles such as reluctant colleagues, funding constraints etc, and will formulate initial plans for taking forward your ideas within your own institution. You will have the opportunity to present your plans to other participants and to have them critiqued.
