Britain’s young people are the unhappiest in the western world, according to a recent UNICEF study of 21 industrialised countries. The findings of this report, show young people to feel unsafe and insecure, be in poor health, unable to maintain loving and successful relationships, have low aspirations and put themselves at risk. The picture that emerges is that the FE sector has to respond to an increasingly complex and diverse range of emotional need that requires effective and appropriate intervention, support and management both within organisations and with external agencies. The purpose of these workshops is to inform staff of the range of mental health conditions and other levels of emotional distress that learners are likely to be exhibiting. It will also show how the college can best support this by adopting an inclusive, whole institution approach and working collaboratively with other agencies such as Health, Social Services and other specialist providers.
